Neonatal
Resuscitation Provider (NRP)
Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) is an education program of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Heart Association (AHA) that teaches concepts and skills of neonatal resuscitation. Our learners study the Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation, 5th Edition, 2006 (or view the DVD-ROM that accompanies the textbook). This allows much of the scheduled course time to be used for hands-on practice and simulation. Emphasis is placed on increasing self-efficacy, managing the unexpected, and supporting the efforts and contributions of each team member. Our NRP courses are designed to cover all nine lessons in the textbook; however, by prior arrangement with the Neonatal Outreach Coordinator, participants may receive credit for the course by completing the minimum course requirement which is Lessons 1 through 4 and Lesson 9. All participants must demonstrate resuscitation skills covered in Lessons 1 through 4 and identify all decision points of the NRP algorithm. Course participants who do not have job responsibilities for procedures such as intubation or umbilical venous catheter placement may learn about and demonstrate these procedures to enhance their learning experience. NRP does not certify the learner to perform any technique, does not imply competence to perform neonatal resuscitation, and does not determine the participant’s scope of practice.
